A visit offers a chance to replace fear with knowledge – and perhaps even a little fascination.

Meet the Reptiles of Zebra Nature Reserve

Snakes, lizards and arachnids may not be everyone’s idea of a close-up wildlife encounter, but at Zebra Nature Reserve, we believe that understanding these fascinating creatures is the first step towards appreciating and conserving them.

Hidden within Zebra Nature Reserve is our Reptile Conservation Centre, a private facility dedicated to the care, education and conservation of reptiles and other often misunderstood creatures. The centre is open to the public by prior appointment, offering visitors the opportunity to get an up-close look at a remarkable collection of reptiles from South Africa, across Africa and further afield.

A closer look at the world of reptiles

A guided visit to the Reptile Conservation Centre offers a fascinating introduction to a variety of species, including both venomous and non-venomous snakes, as well as lizards and a selection of arachnids.

Depending on the animals currently housed at the centre, visitors may encounter some of Africa’s best-known snakes, including mambas, cobras and adders, alongside harmless species such as pythons, house snakes, rat snakes and kingsnakes.

The collection also includes reptiles from other parts of the world, with species from as far afield as the Americas and Australia.

Rather than simply observing these animals through glass, visitors are encouraged to learn about their behaviour, biology, habitats and important role within natural ecosystems. Our knowledgeable reptile centre staff bring years of experience to each guided visit, sharing fascinating insights and answering questions along the way.

From fear to fascination

Snakes and other reptiles often carry an unfair reputation. For many people, fear comes from simply not knowing enough about these animals.

That is one of the key reasons education forms such an important part of our Reptile Conservation Centre.

A closer understanding of reptiles can change the way we see them. From learning how venomous snakes differ from non-venomous species to discovering how reptiles contribute to healthy ecosystems, a visit offers a chance to replace fear with knowledge – and perhaps even a little fascination.

These animals play an important role in nature, and they deserve to be understood and conserved just like any other part of our wildlife heritage.

Conservation beyond the centre

The work at Zebra Nature Reserve extends beyond the animals housed at the Reptile Conservation Centre.

Our team also provides problem snake removal services to surrounding properties, helping to safely relocate snakes while supporting the conservation of local species. Instead of simply viewing snakes as unwanted visitors, these encounters provide an opportunity to protect both people and wildlife.

The centre is also involved in scientific research projects, with studies taking place periodically to contribute to a broader understanding of reptiles and their conservation.

This combination of education, conservation, research and practical snake management makes the Reptile Conservation Centre more than simply a place to see reptiles. It forms part of a wider effort to promote a better understanding of these often misunderstood animals.
